Why the Foundation will focus on Self-Managed Chronic Care Plans...

In October 2007 Deakin University, Carers Australia and Australian Unity released a ground breaking Special Report – “The Wellbeing of Australians – Carer Health and Wellbeing.”

It highlighted facts that are well known in many parts of our community … but too frequently ignored or placed in the too hard basket.

The report tells us that:

• Carers face high levels of depression, anxiety and stress;
• Carers develop illness and injuries brought about by caring for others;
• Carers often neglect their own health, fitness and nutrition, because they do not have the time or money to take care
• of themselves as well;
• Many working Carers live in fear that they will lose their jobs if their loved one needs more intensive care;
• Carers realise they walk a fine tightrope as try to balance work, family and caring for another person … sometimes
• they care for more than one person. How difficult would that be?

Carers deserve a ‘better deal’ and research tells us they need it now!

Australian Carers save the Australian Government over $30 Billion a year. Yet many struggle to make ends meet week to week.

Carers often live in Social Isolation, Financial Distress and Ill Health.

They are one of the most disadvantaged sectors in our society today. It can not continue.
